When Karma is Corrupt: A corporate thriller Description

When Karma is Corrupt - A corporate thriller At first, Francis Scott-Wren seems like any other rich socialite – his tailored suits, international travel, and significant wealth seem to suit him like anyone else born to a life privilege. What no one knows is Scott-Wren has a secret: he uses his wealth and influence to rid the world of greed and selfishness. This time around, however, he has his sights on ruthless power broker George Schwartz, who directs Schwartz Inc. as a vehicle of personal profit and vengeance. Backed by his team of highly trained agents, including his loyal sidekicks Dhammakarati, a Buddhist monk, and the anti-social female agent Jo, they set off on a collision course with Schwartz that will leave some dead and others exposed. As the action travels from five star hotels to Buddhist monasteries to the hallowed halls of the world’s most powerful players, Scott-Wren engages Schwartz in a fierce battle of wits that exposes disturbing similarities between himself and his prey. What remains to be seen is whether they really are so different and how far Scott-Wren is willing to go for victory. " ... fast-paced, enjoyable and well-structured ..." Henry Porter, author of A Spy's Life Full of action and international intrigue, Charlotte Mandrup’s intense corporate thriller is also an examination of significant moral dilemmas including whether the end justifies the means, personal gain versus the greater good, and the righteousness of vigilante justice. An unusual mix of business, action, existential themes, and meditation, readers will find themselves not only on a journey full of danger and violence but also of self-discovery. As thought provoking as it is entertaining, When Karma is Corrupt is a gripping exploration of human nature and the integrity of the world of big business.

When Karma is Corrupt: A corporate thriller Review by Mvoss

Take a step into the jungle of concrete in New York City and move on to the mysterious twilight in the forests surrounding the Buddhist temples. Charlotte Mandrup has done an extraordinary job writing this corporate thriller - a story of powerful people fighting with different means and goals. On one side we follow the intelligent businessman who fights for good karma with his `army' of special trained monks and fighters. On the other side we follow the bad guy, a top lawyer who wants to take control of one of the world's most powerful businesses - whatever it takes. The story is compelling and intense with a refreshing shift in scenes and moral dilemmas. The plot is carefully thought out; the descriptions and characters innovative - although they could be more vivid and specific.

When Karma is Corrupt: A corporate thriller Review by Iona Tamsin Stewart (Odense, Denmark)

I don't usually read thrillers these days, I'd never heard of the concept "corporate thriller" and am not very interested in the business world.

Nevertheless, I found this book to be enjoyable and absorbing, it being a "different" sort of thriller portraying a group of people dedicated to eliminating unethical methods in the corporate world.

The main characters on the side of "good" are Francis, Jo and Dhammakarati. Francis, a charming man born to wealth but with a murky family background, has made it his life work to combat greed and corruption in big business. To this end he has built up an expert team of fellow-collaborators. Jo, his friend and lover, is his main accomplice; she is a master of disguise, trained in the ancient martial art of bando, skilled in meditation and possessing immense self-discipline and emotional control (mostly). She is the one chosen for the most demanding and dangerous missions. Dhammakarati is Jo's dear friend, a Buddhist warrior monk.

The main adversaries of this righteous band are the ruthlessly ambitious Schwartz and his murderously cold associate de Lingua.

The action spans the world - Copenhagen, London, New York and Colombo in Sri Lanka.

One of the interesting features of the book is the insight provided into the monastic world, the quiet disciplined life of daily meditation. One of the themes, though I feel it could have been elaborated on, is the dichotomy between the spiritual ideals and aims of the protagonists and the necessity of carrying out forcible measures. The very concept of a warrior monk exemplifies this dichotomy.

The book is on the whole extremely well-written, though there a few typos and the like, and it thus could have done with more efficient editing. The author has a gift for physical description and her main characters are psychologically realistic. Perhaps certain aspects of the plot and characterization could have been more fully developed.

The book is thought-provoking, since we are left with the question: "Are Francis and his team actually any better than their opponents or are they by their actions merely generating `bad karma'?"

When Karma is Corrupt: A corporate thriller Review by Steve Palm-houser

Buddhism is generally viewed as a peaceful and contemplative spiritual discipline. How could Gautama's teachings come into play as a means to fight the ruthlessness and greed of multinational corporations?

Charlotte Mandrup's novel manages to make it work, at least as an engaging story. In doing so, she explores Buddhism as a spiritual path, and the need to curb the corruption that comes with the enormous economic power wielded by corporations.

Francis Scott-Wren is a wealthy socialite who has made it his life's mission to oppose the power of multinational corporations who place profit above the greater good. Scott-Wren's motivation is to balance the scales--to atone, in some sense, for the decadence of the old European family from which he inherited his life of privilege.

Scott-Wren's field operative is Jo, a woman with marked anti-social tendencies who uses bando, a little-known Buddhist martial art, in her work. Between assignments, Jo also pursues the contemplative side of Buddhism in a monastery under the tutelage of Dhammakarati, a Burmese warrior-monk.

Bando is one of many defensive martial arts that trace their history to Buddhist monasteries. Probably the best-known in Western culture is Shaolin Kung Fu. While it's distasteful for many who have liberal sensibilities, Buddhism does have a place for mindfully employing violence to prevent or correct injustice.

Though he is not on Jo's spiritual path, Francis Scott-Wren discovers for himself the Buddhist concept that the human sense of separateness from others is part of maya, illusion. He begins to understand that he is not that different from the ruthless power broker George Schwartz, the man he perceives as his enemy.

The pace of Mandrup's novel is a little slow at first, but after a few chapters there is enough suspense, sex, and violence to keep the plot humming along. The characters' self-discovery along the way doesn't slow the story down.
